AI Churn Prevention for Media & Publishing

Subscribers who stop reading are flagged before their offer ends or their renewal falls due, with a retention play ready.

Subscribers rarely cancel on impulse. First they stop opening the newsletter, then they stop reading, then the introductory offer ends and they leave. This edition spots that slide by combining reading activity, newsletter engagement, plan and payment data. Your audience team gets an alert with the matching play, such as an editor's pick or a pre-renewal offer, while the reader is still reachable.

  • Drifting subscribers flagged before offers end or renewals fall due
  • Reading, newsletter and payment signals combined per subscriber
  • Each alert paired with a retention play from your playbook

What it is

AI Churn Prevention for Media & Publishing predicts which subscribers are likely to cancel by combining reading activity, newsletter engagement, plan and payment data, and alerts your audience team with the matching play, such as an editor's pick or a pre-renewal offer. It reads up to three sources without changing them. Your editors and audience team stay in charge.

Why businesses buy it

Subscription revenue is the backbone of modern publishing, and every cancelled reader is expensive to replace. The warning signs are clear in your data, but they sit across your paywall, email platform and billing system. This edition joins them so your audience team can act on the readers who matter, before the offer ends. The written scope sets out the three read-only sources, the signals used and the plays included before you order.

Problems this solves

Subscribers stop reading long before they cancel

Reading activity and newsletter engagement are combined with plan and payment data. Subscribers whose reading drops are flagged to your audience team before the cancellation comes.

Retention offers go out to everyone at the same time

Each alert carries the matching play from your Media & Publishing playbook, such as an editor's pick or a pre-renewal offer. Offers can reach the subscribers who need them.

Newsletter opens and site visits sit in separate tools

The product reads up to three sources without changing them, such as your analytics, email platform and subscription system. One view shows engagement across all of them.

A good fit if

Subscribers sign up on an introductory offer and a large share cancel when it ends, with little warning beforehand.
Reading data sits in your CMS or analytics, newsletter engagement in the email platform, and payments in the subscription platform.
Your audience team has retention plays but sends them to everyone, rather than to readers who are actually drifting.
A small team needs a short list of who to act on each week, not another dashboard to interpret.

Not the right fit if

You want each reader shown more relevant content on the website itself. See AI Website Personalization for Media & Publishing.
Producing a regular newsletter is the bottleneck. See AI Newsletter Engine for Media & Publishing.
Subscriber support questions about billing and access are overwhelming the team. See AI Customer Support Agent for Media & Publishing.
You need more than three sources, such as an ad platform as well, or scores written back to the subscription platform. Add a note at checkout for a Change Quote.

How it works

  1. Three publishing sources are read. Usually your subscription platform, your email platform and your CMS or reading analytics, all with read-only access.
  2. Reader metrics are defined with you. Up to 25, such as articles read per week, sections followed, newsletter opens and clicks, plan type, offer end date and failed payments.
  3. Subscribers are grouped by state. The Media & Publishing template distinguishes new subscribers, regular readers, lapsing readers, offer ending and payment problems.
  4. The model is tested on your past subscribers. Three months of history show whether cancellations would have been flagged in time.
  5. The audience team is alerted. Up to five alerts, for example a reader who has stopped opening newsletters with an offer ending soon, go to email, Slack or a dashboard.
  6. People choose the response. The suggested play comes from your playbook, and a team member reviews any message before a subscriber sees it.

What you provide within 72 hours

Your portal lists these the moment you order. Delivery starts the working day after everything is in and your access is checked.

  • Read-only access to your subscription platform, email platform and CMS or reading analytics.
  • Your subscriber list with plan, start date, offer end date and renewal date.
  • Definitions of an engaged reader, such as articles read or newsletters opened in a typical week.
  • At least three months of history, including subscribers who cancelled.
  • Your retention playbook, for example editor's picks, win-back offers or plan switches.
  • Alert recipients and channel, plus admin access and API keys for each source, never sent by email.
  • One decision-maker, usually the head of audience or subscriptions.
  • An API key for your own AI model account (for example OpenAI or Google Gemini), created for this build with a spending limit.
The 72-hour rule. Send everything on your checklist, including access, within 72 hours of ordering so your build starts on time.

Expected benefits and how to measure them

  • Helps your audience team re-engage readers while they still value the product.
  • Can make retention offers more targeted and less costly.
Monthly subscriber cancellations
Compare cancellations from your subscription system for the quarter before launch with the two quarters after.
Reading recovery after a play
Track whether flagged subscribers read more articles in the month after an editor's pick or offer.
Renewal rate on annual plans
Compare annual renewals in the two quarters after launch with the same quarters a year earlier.

Before you start: Record monthly cancellations and annual renewal rates. Note which retention offers you use today and who receives them.

These are things to track, not promised results. Outcomes depend on your data, your team and your market.

Running costs

You pay once for the build. Running costs of roughly $20 to $150 a month for AI model usage and hosting or scheduling are billed in your own accounts, separate from your subscription, email and CMS fees.

Usage during build and testing is billed to you directly as well, so every provider account remains the publisher's.

Custom requirements

Reading advertiser data from an ad platform as a fourth source, writing scores back to your subscription platform, or a sixth alert is outside the Scope Card. Add a note at checkout for a written Change Quote. Larger or bespoke projects go through the Custom AI request form instead.

Keep it running

Monthly maintenance covers monitoring, fixes, model and platform updates, a monthly health report and monthly hours for changes, such as a new offer, a new newsletter to track, or a reweighted metric. Your change hours scale with the build. It starts after the 30 days of support.

$249/mo (the minimum fee, includes 2 change hours)

Optional. Starts after the post-launch support period. Cancel any month.

Questions about this product

What signals does AI Churn Prevention for Media & Publishing use?

Up to 25 metrics you define, drawn from up to three read-only sources. Typical ones are articles read, sections followed, newsletter opens and clicks, plan type, introductory offer end date, renewal date and failed payments. Every metric is agreed with you before the model is built.

Can it warn us before introductory offers end?

Yes. Offer ending is a state in the Media & Publishing template. An alert can fire when a subscriber's offer is about to end and their reading or newsletter engagement has dropped, so the team can act before the first full-price payment rather than after the cancellation.

Does it send retention emails to subscribers?

No. It alerts your audience team and suggests the play from your playbook, such as an editor's pick or a plan switch. A team member reviews and sends any message, so offers and tone stay under editorial control. Your existing lifecycle emails keep running unchanged.

Can advertisers be tracked as well as subscribers?

Only if they are in the customer list with renewal dates and their signals come from the same three sources. Reading data from an ad platform would be a fourth source and needs a Change Quote. Most publishers start with subscribers and add advertisers later.

What does the media and publishing edition cost?

Each delivery speed has one fixed price. The price panel shows standard, express and rush side by side before you pay, and the cart confirms your delivery date. Each speed includes the Media & Publishing workflow template, the three-month history check and 30 days of support. Running costs of roughly $20 to $150 a month are separate and paid to your own providers.

Our reading data is anonymous. Can it still work?

Partly. Reading signals only help when they can be tied to a subscriber, for example through logged-in reading. If they cannot, the model relies on newsletter engagement, plan and payment data instead. We confirm what can be joined during intake, before the build starts.

Keep the readers who quietly stopped reading.

Order AI Churn Prevention for Media & Publishing and reading, newsletter and payment signals flag drifting subscribers before their offer ends, with a play ready for your audience team.
